On Golden Pond (Squam Lakes)

Squam Lakes and Holderness, New Hampshire probably sound unfamiliar, but if you've been around a while, you know them better as On Golden Pond.

Much of the movie, although set in Maine, was filmed on New Hampshire's Squam Lakes, near Holderness. There are two of these glacial lakes: Big Squam and Little Squam. And yes, loons return here every year.

You can even take a short, affordable pontoon-boat tour of the two lakes, courtesy of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center. The cruise includes some movie locations, and with some luck you might even see a loon or two.
